Who should apply?

Extension professionals in their first five years with NC State Extension or Rutgers Cooperative Extension of New Jersey who want to develop their capacity to lead change in their communities. This program does not require any previous leadership experience, just a willingness to learn and lead change. Check out the application.

Who has adaptive challenges to solve?

We all do. Our communities continue to grow and change. In order for our Extension work to grow with our communities, we have to help resolve challenges for which there aren’t existing solutions.

Why transformative leadership?

We are in a position to lead change in our communities and that change must make our communities more just and more equitable. Transformative leadership engages us ina democratic process to bring about such change.

What costs should participants expect?

None. There is no fee and our sessions will be online for 2023-2024 so there are no anticipated travel expenses for you.

What will participants do?

Each month, you will participate in a synchronous Zoom session with your whole cohort. During this time, we’ll work through pieces of the process of adaptive leadership, power and authority, and building networks to enact change.

Second, you’ll have work-work – it’s not homework, it’s applying what we’re doing to your Extension work. Your work-work will make what we are learning practical in your career.

Third, you’ll have one-on-one and/or small group sessions with me to work through problems collaboratively and answer questions as you do your work-work. These will be scheduled as needed.

Finally, you will finish your first Agents for Change year with a plan to address your adaptive challenge, progress toward your solution, and a network of fellow agents and program leadership for continued support. You will spend your second year implementing this plan with support. Some of you may choose to pursue a presentation or publication about your work and we will support you through that as well.

Who should you talk to before deciding?

Certainly, talk with your County Extension Director. You’ll want them on board with your work. And I’m happy to answer any questions I can: kemckee@ncsu.edu.
