Hillsborough, NC – Members of Orange County 4-H and Orange FFA were among ninety-four youth from eleven North Carolina counties who competed at the 77th Annual Central Piedmont Junior Livestock Show & Sale held on Orange Grove Road April 11-12. This annual tradition brought together the community to celebrate youth and their livestock projects. Swine, cattle, lambs, and goats were shown throughout the course of the two-day show. After three years of a reduced schedule due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the annual barbeque supper, awards program, and live auction sale returned this year with over 200 people attending.

A key part of the show each year is the showmanship classes. Showmanship classes provide opportunities for youth exhibitors to demonstrate their knowledge of the livestock industry and show the judge what they have been learning about animal welfare, health & nutrition, and other factors contributing to the development of quality livestock. Sawyer Hughes won Senior Grand Champion Swine Showmanship and Sarah Beth Roberts won Reserve Champion Swine Showmanship. Rhiley Crabtree earned first place in the Senior Market Steer Showmanship class and Crawford Farmer earned Reserve Champion. Margaret Prinzo was the Reserve Champion in the Senior Goat Showmanship Class.

Thanks to the support of area businesses, individuals, and families, the Central Piedmont Junior Livestock Show committee raised over $30,000 to support participating youth from Orange and Durham Counties. “I would like to thank everyone in the community for the support this year and in every previous year”, says Vaughn Compton, president of the Central Piedmont Junior Livestock Show. “Whether you made a financial contribution or contributed an in-kind donation of supplies or services, we would not have been able to host this event without you. It is a true community effort every single year.”
