There are a number of benefits gained by participating in youth 4-H Animal Science activities. To list just a few, youth participants learn responsibility, decision-making skills, animal care, communication, financial management, record keeping, and improve their overall self-confidence. They can also earn medals, ribbons, trophies, and even monetary awards all while having loads of fun!

One of the animal science projects that the N.C. Cooperative Extension, Currituck County Center offers is a Domestic Poultry show. This project starts in the spring where participants register, receive and raise two baby chicks for the purpose of showing one of them in the show that is held in the fall of that year. The only bird that can be present for the show is one of the two birds that were provided by the 4-H staff in the spring. No outside chickens are allowed to be shown.

Winners of Poultry ShowOn Friday, November 1, 2019, Currituck County 4-H hosted their annual 4-H Poultry show. Participants brought their chickens, raised since the pick-up meeting in May. These participants were asked to show their birds and answer questions about the different body parts, what feed they were feeding, and what they had learned about their chickens since the beginning of the project. The top Senior Showmanship winner for the event went to Brooke DeCant, the top Junior Showmanship winner and the Champion of the show went to Kiersten Powell. Other participants included JW Forbes, Brayden White, Paige Powell, Sarabeth Forbes, Avery Watson, Morgan Temple, Natalie Barco, Caleb Minton, Bella Vaughan, and Oliver Barco.

If you would like more information regarding this animal science program or any of the other programs offered through the Currituck County 4-H Program, please contact Stephanie Minton at 232-2262.
